Dark and Spooky Reads for Fall 2023

I’ve heard it said that all of September is just Halloween Eve, and I’m here for it. (So are our neighbors, who are putting up decorations right now.) What better way to get into the creepy spirit than new tales of terror?

With the long, dark nights of fall and winter upon us, here’s some spooky season horror books to add to your TBR pile!

Black Sheep by Rachel Harrison — Fictions & Fandoms

BLACK SHEEP by Rachel Harrison

What induces more horror than returning home to your weirdly religious family & the community that ostracized you? Discovering that they’re actually a for-really-real cult—and things are gonna get MESSY. Biting & fun terror! Black Sheep, come home. Black sheep, come home…

BLACK SHEEP by Rachel Harrison is available now! » Buy it on Amazon.

Schrader's Chord by Scott Leeds — Fictions & Fandoms

SCHRADER’S CHORD by Scott Leeds

I’m currently halfway through this book, and really enjoying it! Can’t believe this is a debut novel, the prose is terrific. A moody, pacific northwest story about cursed vinyl records that open a gateway to the dead. Genuine heart in the horror, which makes it all the better.

SCHRADER’S CHORD by Scott Leeds is available now! » Buy it on Amazon.

The Grimmer by Naben Ruthnum — Fictions and Fandoms

THE GRIMMER by Naben Ruthnum

This young adult supernatural thriller follows a heavy metal-obsessed brown kid in a small, white town who gets pulled into occult shenanigans. Think Stranger Things vibes, creepy bookstores, math magic, the undead! The perfect, scary, accessible Halloween read. This was also my first discovery from ECW Press, a Canadian publisher with a diverse lineup of authors and books.

THE GRIMMER by Naben Ruthnum is available September 26th. » Buy it on Amazon.

The Dead Take the A Train by Cassandra Khaw and Richard Kadrey — Fictions and Fandoms

THE DEAD TAKE THE A TRAIN by Cassandra Khaw and Richard Kadrey

If you’d handed me this novel with no names attached and prompted me to “guess the co-authors”, I really think I would have answered “Kadrey & Khaw”. It’s a high octane alchemy that’s so intrinsically *them*. Take urban fantasy, cosmic horror, a little bit of rom-com, and heaps & piles of entrails—put ‘em in a blender, and enjoy the squishy, viscous, dynamite results.

THE DEAD TAKE THE A TRAIN by Cassandra Khaw and Richard Kadrey comes out October 3rd. » Buy it on Amazon.

I talked with Cass and Richard about this book on the FICTITIOUS podcast. Go have a listen.

Which books are you adding to your TBR? What other new horror should I be reading? Let me know.
